Competition
A tournament experience centered on spirited play and the game we love.

Our tournament
Swing Into Spring brings racquetball players and friends together for competition, connection, and a memorable time in Sun City West.
Our story
What began in 1990 as a simple doubles tournament has become a tradition built around great competition. Lake Westphal and Walter Urbach developed the event with input from fellow board members. The $15 entry fee covered a few snacks and a wine and cheese gathering on the final day. There were no tournament shirts—just players who loved the game.
In those early years, the tournament ran for three days, with the two brackets reaching their finals on Sunday. The details have evolved, but doubles competition remains at the heart of the event.
My connection to the tournament goes back to 1991, when Bob Warren played. I was 36 and didn’t meet the age requirement, so I had to watch from the sidelines. After we moved here in 1998, our involvement with the club helped bring about a change: residents could play, as could players over 50. I finally got my chance to compete.
I joined the club board around 2010 and became president around 2012. Over time, I helped run the tournament and, a few years ago, took over as director. It’s a privilege to carry on an event that has always meant so much to its players.
Today, Swing Into Spring has become a sought after event with participants traveling to Arizona from as far as New York! I look forward to seeing you on the court at our next event!
